Charoite, referred to locally as “lilac stone,” is a rare and expensive intense purple or translucent lavender colored silicate mineral named after the Chara River in Russia. This river passes a region of active sand dunes containing a mountain that holds the only charoite deposit ever found, which was discovered in the 1940s. This mineral tends to form along with canasite and tinaksite, occurs in massive form and has a strange fibrous, swirling appearance that-- when combined with its wild color-- gives many the initial impression that it must be either enhanced or synthetic, but these amazing qualities indeed occur naturally. Charoite exhibits a monoclinic crystal system, a Moh’s scale hardness of 5-6, a specific gravity of 2.54-2.58, and a vitreous to pearly luster. It is also weakly fluorescent. Since its introduction into the western gemstone market back in the 1970s, it has been used in carvings, cabochons, ornamental pieces, and sought out for personal collections.

With its mesmerizing eddies and swirls in varying shades of dreamy, deep purple, the energy present within charoite is nearly tangible. Many claim that it is one of the very best illuminators and dream stones present in nature, and use it to access past life lessons, defeat fears that hold them back in their present, and attain spiritual guidance for their futures. Coming from a region of Siberia that once commonly held political prisoners, charoite has, over the years, become a symbol of endurance and a comfort source for those facing adversity. It is believed to grant courage, aid in overcoming loss of employment, sustain prisoners, and assist others who might otherwise feel imprisoned within boarding schools, hospitals, residential care and the like. It is also said to provide support for adoptive parents and caregivers, connection and emotional healing for those who live in isolation or work away from home, and relief for those who fear illness, pain and death. If you lack observation and/or decision making skills, you might giving keeping charoite with you a try, as well, as it may give you a leg up.

On a physical level, charoite is considered to provide the body with increased overall physical strength and to generally transmute disease and illness into wellness. It is also used by crystal healers in particular to regulate pulse and blood pressure, overcome exhaustion, treat conditions of the heart and the eyes, improve the state of a degraded pancreas or liver, and ease headaches, migraines, cramps and other pains of an aching nature. When taken in the form of an elixir, charoite is said to be a wonderful cleanser of the body. If you are someone who suffers from sleep disturbances such as sleep talking, sleep walking and/or insomnia, wearing charoite against your skin or placing it beneath your pillow before bedtime  may help to promote a much needed deep sleep. It could also make a great gift to a friend or loved one who struggles with Asperger’s syndrome, autism, or ADHD, as it is believed to have a calming effect on the nerves.
