Rose quartz, sometimes also referred to as “bohemian ruby,” “hyaline quartz,” “pink quartz” or the “love stone,” is a pink variety of quartz crystal that is commonly found in Brazil and Madagascar. It is a silicon dioxide crystal and one of the more common types of quartz. Its color may range from pale to strong, with the stronger colored specimens demanding a higher price on the market (although pale and stronger colored specimens are considered to be equally valuable for metaphysical purposes). It exhibits a Moh's scale hardness of 7, a vitreous luster, and is translucent. It is usually found in massive form as opposed to obvious crystal shape. Rose quartz was prized by ancient Romans and Egyptians for its alleged powers of beautification, and continues to serve as a major carving stone in China today.

In the metaphysical world, rose quartz is associated with the heart chakra and the astrological signs of libra and taurus. Number 7 is its numerical vibration. It is known to be the crystal of unconditional love. Wearing it, meditating with it and/or keeping it near is believed to open the heart up to all kinds of love: romantic love, love of family and friends, and love of self. Though rose quartz has a high energy like other kinds of quartz, it gives off a soothing and calming vibe. Additionally, this stone fosters forgiveness, reconciliation and empathy, and it is said to lower tension and stress in the heart, clear out resentment, jealousy and anger, and help to heal a broken heart. Rose quartz may also attract love or help rebuild trust and recommitment to an already existing relationship. As you can imagine, it is a great crystal to keep in various locations around the home to promote love and healing within the family.

In the world of physical healing, rose quartz is believed to have beneficial effects on the skin, circulatory system, and female reproductive system. Rubbing blisters and burns with a polished stone may have a soothing effect. Unsightly scars may diminish. Used in the form of an elixir, it may reduce wrinkles, clear the skin of blemishes and promote an overall soft complexion. Keeping a specimen of rose quartz on your person is said to promote proper functioning and health of the heart and circulatory system. You may notice a relief from stress and tension and the return of a regular heartbeat (rhythm). This crystal is ideal for young children or premature babies suffering from heart disease or weakness, and people of any age in need of a more stable, stronger heart. Additionally, those who keep rose quartz near may enjoy a release of impurities within their bodies, healing of the adrenals and kidneys, loss of vertigo, and easing of lung and chest problems (when the crystal is placed upon the thymus). Females among these may experience an increase in fertility and alleviation of post-partum depression, sexual difficulties and any issues arising as a result of complicated births.
