Epidote is one of the finest classic display minerals, with its lustrous, delicate, elongated  and often interconnected crystals. Common, but regardless highly valued among collectors, this mineral is well represented in the best collections. It has a vitreous, pearly lustre and comes in various shades of green as well as yellow, brown, and black, with a pistachio color being typical. Its composition is a basic calcium aluminum iron silicate, and it falls between 6 and 7 on the hardness scale and 3.3 and 3.6 for specific gravity. It displays a monoclinic crystal system and ranges from transparent to almost opaque in appearance. A few noteworthy epidote localities include the Austrian Alps, Pakistan, Balochistan, Iran, and China. The most productive locality in the US is in Alaska, on Prince of Wales Island.

Epidote is associated with the astrological signs of gemini and virgo. It is said to promote spiritual growth and perception of and interaction with spiritual beings. It may raise a person's vibrational energy and release him or her from a negative thinking pattern, as well as increase the memory and clear the emotional body aura. It is believed that it enhances the energy of everything that it touches, including other stones. As you would imagine, this makes it a valuable addition to any collection. Its name comes from the greek word “epidosis,” which appropriately means “addition” or “increase.” This stone is said to have the ability to teach you that “you reap what you sow,” in that it will bring you more of whatever kind of energy you emanate (more of the same). Thus, it may affect different people in different ways. A person could essentially program this gemstone to attract whatever it is that he or she desires, as long as some amount of said desired quality already resides within him or her. For example, if what you desire is prosperity, keeping this stone with you and exhibiting a generous, giving behavior should bring more prosperity and generosity back to you. The reverse-- the extra negativity that the stone brings back to you-- can be beneficial as well, in that it can make you aware of the qualities that you posses that you would do well to change. One could use this stone to learn more about him or herself and thus improve his or her interactions and relationships with other people. So, this stone can be viewed as a catalyst for change, enabling you to change your reality and live the life of your dreams.

On a physical level, epidote is used by crystal healers to help clear energy blockages and congestion in the body. It can be used to increase, balance out and stabilize energy in the body as a whole, and to facilitate in absorption of nutrients during digestion. It is said to be a great stone for aiding in healing and recovery in general. Wearers claim that it possesses the abilities to dissipate tumors and stimulate the immune system. It may also help people to lose weight, if the weight gain  stems from an emotional source.
