Serpentine rock is a rock composed of one or multiple minerals of the serpentine group. The minerals that make up this group are formed by the process of “serpentinization,” which is a metamorphic and hydration transformation of ultramafic rock residing in the earth’s mantle. They are used as a decorative stone and as a source of asbestos and magnesium. The term “serpentine” can apply to up to 20 varieties of minerals in gemology and mineralogy. The name is said to come from its greenish color and sometimes scaly appearance, but it also exists in brown, black, white, gray, yellow and spotted or veined forms. You may have seen some of these minerals in the form of jewelry or in hardstone carving (possibly under the description “teton jade” or “false jade”). They are also used in industry for a range of purposes. Most serpentines exhibit a Moh’s scale hardness of 2.5-4, a specific gravity of 2.2-2.9, and are opaque to translucent, susceptible to acids and infusible. They usually have a vitreous, silky or greasy luster and they are only microcrystalline and massive in habit. Serpentine is found worldwide. It is also sometimes referred to as “new jade.”
In the metaphysical world, serpentine is associated with the remembrance of past lives, longevity, the astrological sign of gemini, and the elements of earth and air. It is said to enhance spiritual exploration, aid in meditation, and open up new pathways for Kundalini energy. It may assist in the retrieval of wisdom and regaining of memory from past lives. Keeping serpentine with you, wearing it, or holding it on a regular basis is believed to result in the clearing of all chakras and the stimulation of the crown chakra in particular, which in turn opens up psychic abilities. Problem areas can have healing energy consciously directed to them by serpentine. These minerals are credited with the correction of emotional and mental imbalances by many people, which in turn helped them to feel more in control of their lives. Serpentine has also been used as a protective measure against venom, poison, and snakebite for a long time, and many believe that it makes a decent good luck charm, attracting money and love.
Serpentine is also believed to be a useful mineral to have handy in the medical bag. Aside from the aforementioned metaphysical benefits, it has been used by crystal healers with reported success in the treatment of hypoglycemia and diabetes. It is also believed to be very detoxifying and cleansing for the blood and body and to assist in the absorption of magnesium and calcium. Additionally, it may eliminate parasitic infections within the body, promote cellular regeneration, help to regulate the milk supply of nursing women, battle stomach and kidney ailments, relax menstrual pain and cramps, and help women to achieve orgasm during sex.
