Ametrine, also referred to as “trystine” or “bolivianite” (its trade name), is a rare and fascinating type of quartz containing zones of different colors in a single specimen. It is naturally occurring. It is made up of a mixture of citrine and amethyst, and the zones are yellow or orange and purple in coloration. The different colored zones form as a result of the oxidation states of iron varying within the crystal. The oxidation states are different due to a temperature gradient being present during the crystal's formation. Thus, specimens of ametrine can be (and often are) half purple and half yellow/orange in coloration, split straight down the middle. Deposits of ametrine are currently being mined in India and Brazil, but nearly all of the crystals available on the market today come from Bolivia. Lower priced crystals may have been formed synthetically through (differential) heat treatment of amethyst. Legend has it that ametrine originally became famous when it was received in a dowry by a Spanish conquistador who was marrying a princess in the seventeenth century. It was then given to the queen of Spain and introduced to Europe. Ametrine is well suited to a variety of uses in jewelry as it is considered to be a highly durable gemstone. It is also sometimes used for carving.
