“Ocean jasper” is the registered trademark name given to an unusual variety of orbicular jasper by The Gem Shop, Inc. This mineral is found in only one place in the world: a remote location along the rugged shores of northeast Madagascar. It is an exciting stone that comes in a wild range and combination of colors and exhibits attractive spherical, wavy line and floret pattern inclusions of variable coloration. It is a  microcrystalline quartz and a member of the chalcedony family. It exhibits a Moh's scale hardness of 6.5 to 7 and is an agate by standard definition. It requires protection from sharp blows and scratches. Its existence and appearance is due to volcanic flow that took place millions of years ago. A few collectors have traded ocean jasper around since the early 1900s, and stories about the stone have existed since that time, but the site of the original quarry had been lost. It was an instant sensation at the Tuscon Gem and Mineral show in 2000, when it made its highly anticipated reappearance after 45 days of searching by members of the mining company Madagascar Minerals. The source of the trouble in locating the deposit was that it was only visible at low tide! The sole deposit has since been depleted, driving up price and scarcity of the stone, and the search for more deposits has thus far been unsuccessful. Ocean jasper has risen in popularity and demand, becoming one of the most collectible stones in recent years and a favorite amongst collectors. It can be cut and polished to be used in jewelry, tumbled or made into cabochons in addition to being a gorgeous ornamental piece.

Ocean jasper is associated with the month of January, the zodiac signs of leo and aquarius, the element of fire and the planet Mars. It is said to link the vibrations of the throat, heart and solar plexus chakras, putting its owner in closer awareness to his or her own personal power and strengths and making him or her more aware of the good things in life. It is considered a nurturing stone. It is claimed to absorb negative energy, encouraging tranquility, wholeness, and honesty with one's self, and provide protection, energy and support during prolonged times of stress. It is said to clear radiation and other kinds of environmental or electromagnetic pollution. It may also provide its wearer with quicker thinking abilities, courage to tackle issues, and improved organizational skills. Individual forms and colors of ocean jasper may provide specific healing benefits in addition to these generic metaphysical healing properties listed.

Wearers claim that ocean jasper can aid in the recovery of a range of physical illnesses because they heal at a deep cellular level. It is said to increase the health of the internal organs, including those that make up the female reproductive system, and ease the symptoms of PMS. It may also help aid gum infections, tumors, skin conditions (such as eczema), bloating and the digestive and lymphatic systems as a whole.
