Amazonite, also known as “amazon stone” or “amazon jade,” is a type of microcline that is of limited occurrence and is green or blue-green in coloration. It is a feldspar mineral that is found in masses of tabular or short, prismatic crystals. It may contain gray or yellow portions. It exhibits a vitreous luster and may range from transparent to opaque. Small quantities of lead and water give this stone its blue-green color, though up until the 1980's it was believed that the color was derived from copper compounds. For jewelry making purposes it is normally cut into cabochons as it fractures easily. One should take special care with this soft stone when storing or wearing it. Historically it was regarded as a decorative and amulet stone. It was found along with Tutankhamen's treasures and is believed to have adorned Amazonian shields. “Green stones” were allegedly originally obtained from the Amazon River and the surrounding jungle region in Brazil and were named “amazonite” in honor of the site. It is not known for certain that these stones were actually amazonite as we know it today because there are no known deposits located there currently. It has been extracted from places such as the Ilmen Mountains within granite rocks, Colorado within pegmatite or coarse granite, and the Morefield Mine in Virginia. It can also be found in pegmatite in Brazil and Madagascar.

Metaphysically amazonite is said to improve the quality of the married life, help one to overcome loneliness, and aid in the effective communication of true feelings and thoughts without dramatics. If you are an overly emotional person who typically struggles to remove yourself from a situation and see the big picture, keeping amazonite as a companion may help you to view a scenario from multiple points of view and objectively resolve conflicts. It could prove useful in the home, as there have been claims that a bowl of these stones kept on the kitchen table stimulate all family members to help out with housework and that stones hidden in a child's bedroom encourage tidiness. In the workplace place it near phones, televisions, microwaves, and other electronics. Amazonite may block geopathic stress, provide protection from electromagnetic pollution, and absorb microwaves. Additionally you might consider taping it to your cell phone as it is believed to absorb harmful cell phone emanations. This stone is also believed to be good luck, protecting against being taken advantage of and unfair business practices, attracting orders and customers to your business, bringing forth new opportunities, and tipping odds in your favor in competitions or games of chance.

Amazonite is believed to emanate physical healing energy as well. It is regarded as a stone that promotes good general health. It is said to aid in healing after injury or illness, cellular regeneration, ailments of the nervous system and throat and thyroid gland. Crystal healers also claim that amazonite provides benefits for those suffering from calcium deficiency, malnourished hair or hair loss, common ailments of the skin (blisters, rash, acne), joint pain, and sexual disorders. It may also facilitate a safe and healthy childbirth.
