Gaspeite is a type of nickel carbonate that is a pleasing pale to apple (or sometimes even neon) green color with brown inclusions, giving it a distinctive character. It is a member of the calcite mineral group with a hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale, a specific gravity of 3.7, a hexagonal crystal system and a vitreous to dull lustre. It is a very rare gemstone that has only been found in deposits in two locations in the world: Canada and Australia-- most of which have since been depleted. It was fairly recently first discovered in 1966 at the Gaspe Peninsula in Canada, for which it was named. It is found as a secondary mineral around the oxidation zone of nickel sulfide deposits. Though initially discarded during the mining of nickel sulfide as a worthless byproduct, Gaspeite is becoming popular today in the semi-precious gemstone market among gemstone and mineral collectors alike. It is considered a more readily obtainable and affordable alternative to green turquoise, with its similar color and brown matrix or patches. Specimens are sliced into slabs or polished when they are sold on the market. They are often cut into cabochons and beads for jewelry. Since it is such a soft stone, it cannot be faceted and is not an ideal choice for bracelets or rings. Owners must take great care of it to prevent it being cracked, broken or scratched. This gemstone, being so recently discovered, has little known folk lore, but it is mentioned that it was used by the aborigines to bring about visions, good fortune and success.
