Cryolite, sometimes also called by the name of “ice stone,” is an uncommon halide mineral (specifically, a sodium aluminum fluoride) that can be colorless, white, brown, red, or rarely black in coloration. Its crystals are prismatic and monoclinic. It exhibits a specific gravity of 2.95 to 3, a Moh's hardness of 2.5 to 3, and is transparent to translucent. It is found in granite intruded gneiss as a pegmatite. An interesting fact about cryolite is that when the colorless variety is immersed in water, it becomes invisible. This is because it has a refractive index that is very close to that of water. There once was a large deposit of cryolite located on Greenland's west coast, but by 1987, it was depleted. Aside from this location, cryolite has also been found in the United States, Canada, Russia, Brazil, Namibia, and Ukraine. Historically, cryolite's function was as an ore of aluminum. Later, it was used in the electrolytic processing of bauxite, which is an aluminum rich oxide ore. It is no longer used in this way, as it is considered to be too rare for this purpose. Cryolite has also been used as a pesticide and insecticide, in the refining of aluminum, and to give yellow color to fireworks.
