Chrysocolla is a hydrated silicate mineral-- a copper cyclosilicate mineral, to be exact-- that forms secondarily in the oxidation zone of copper ore bodies, frequently in association with azurite and malachite. Its structure has been questioned ever since a study conducted in 2006 provided evidence that it may in fact be composed of a mixture of amorphous silica, water and spertinite (a copper hydroxide mineral). Chrysocolla is blue, green, or cyan (blue-green) in coloration and typically has a massive, botryoidal and nodular crystal habit. It exhibits a orthorhombic crystal system, a Moh's scale hardness of 2.5-3.5, a specific gravity of 1.9-2.4, and a vitreous to dull luster. Noteworthy localities include the United States, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Israel, Chile, and England.
Highly regarded as a stone of teaching, chrysocolla is believed to encourage us to clearly, effectively, and often lovingly share our knowledge with others in a way that benefits them and has a positive impact on the world. This would make it a valuable companion stone for parents, grandparents, public speakers, teachers, actors, artists, musicians and the like. In the case of musicians, it may especially be valuable because it is said to be a good luck charm of sorts within the profession, aiding in the learning of playing new instruments and lending the confidence needed to play in front of an audience. If you or someone you know tends to wander and struggle to maintain a home or sense of belonging in any one place, a gift of chrysocolla might come in handy, as well. It is claimed to make those in its vicinity feel at home, while at the same time keeping at bay the feelings of depression and anxiety that can plague homebodies. For this reason, chrysocolla represents hermits, monks and prisoners. In addition, this lovely crystal may calm emotional stress, encourage inspiration, dissipate tension within changing relationships, and provide acceptance, inner strength and stability inside home and work environments.
Chrysocolla's calming energy proves beneficial in a physical healing setting, as well. Crystal healers use it to ease cases of hyperkinetic movement and nervous disorders such as anxiety and depression. It may sometimes be considered a woman's stone in particular, as it is believed to reduce pain due to the menstrual cycle and encourage a happy pregnancy by relieving stress related to the upcoming life changing event. Chrysocolla is also said to combat high blood pressure, regulate blood sugar levels (especially in the case of Type 2 diabetes), aid those who suffer with blood disorders and lung issues, and help with burns, scars, infection and fever. Finally, it may also support proper health and functioning of the adrenals, thyroid, larynx and digestive system, as well as strengthen and soothe the muscles and treat arthritis, rheumatism, and issues associated with hip replacement or hip joints in general.
