Cerussite is a mineral that consists of lead carbonate and sometimes chromium and silver. It is also referred to as “white lead ore” or “lead carbonate.” Particularly in arid regions, it forms around oxidized lead deposits as a secondary mineral. It exhibits an orthorhombic crystal system, a Moh’s scale hardness of 3-3.5, and a specific gravity of 6.53-6.57. It comes in white, blue, gray, green, and colorless forms and is transparent to translucent. White lead used to be the key ingredient in lead based paints, but it is now discontinued. It also used to be used in cosmetics, but this practice has ceased as well. This ore of lead is popular among mineral collectors—especially the specimens that form beautiful twinned crystals.
